Handmade cards

My dad used to make and sell pottery and teach classes when I was younger. It was really fun to hang out at the pottery and make whatever I wanted. This meant that for a while all my gifts to everyone for birthdays and Christmas was something I had made myself at the Pottery. I enjoyed choosing what I would make for each particular friend and took great care in making it.

This stopped very abruptly one Christmas when my school friends muttered and whispered loudly behind my back about these presents. I was then told (I forget which friend was given the task) that they all thought I was a cheap skate for making these gifts and not buying them something from a shop instead. I was crushed and embarrassed. It hadn't occurred to me that it would be viewed in that way. And I guess we were getting to that age where a handmade pottery mug wasn't exactly a young girls dream present. Still that moment (like many school moments do) wounded me and little scar remained in my mind about the nature of gift giving. I never made anyone anything handmade again and my husband will tell you I have a tendency to spend way too much on presents. I think I still fear being viewed as a cheap skate.

The fact of the matter is, if I received something homemade from a friend I would love it all the more. And since making my own Mothers day card recently I'm reviewing the whole situation.

So I'd like to say right now, if you are a friend of mine expect a handmade card in the near future you lucky thing...

It costs me very little and is fun for me to do...

It makes me real happy to think of you seeing it...

So it's a win win for me...

I mean hopefully you'll like it too...

But either way I'm good.

And that leads nicely onto the fact that I recently made a card for my Mum's birthday too. Luckily for me she has always been a fan of my handmade stuff. It's a mum thing I guess.

I sketched some trees then went over it in ink pen...

Then painted a blue wash for the background...

I then added some red and white for blossom (I think I'm willing spring to come even in my painting)...

I removed the tape...

And then stuck it onto some card...

And voila.
